Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- Sources for Propers --

The Propers of the Mass (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, Communion) have been gaining more and more popularity as liturgists and musicians turn to the actual texts of the Mass to use in Liturgy. Perhaps gone are the days of arbitrary, four-song Masses, which amount to little more than a "sing-along" with the Folk Group leading a selection of favorite hits of the 1980s.

There are sources these Propers, both within and outside the CNP catalog. Check these out for real and authentic Catholic liturgical music:

General Sources for Multiple Propers

  • Graduale Romanum — Gregorian chants (in Latin with chant notation) for all the Propers of the Liturgical Year
  • Gregorian Missal — Gregorian chants (in Latin with chant notation) for all the Sunday Propers of the Liturgical Year; titles, directions and translations in English
  • Graduale Simplex — Easier Gregorian chants (in Latin with chant notation) for many of the Propers
  • By Flowing Waters — English translation of the Graduale Simplex (in modern notation)
  • English Proper Chants (John Ainslie) — English antiphons with a psalm tone and verses (in modern notation)
  • Lumen Christi Simple Gradual Adam Bartlett) — Simple English chant antiphons for the Entrance, Offertory and Communion processions specially arranged for congregational singing (chant notation)
  • Mass Propers for the Liturgical Year — An utterly simple, noble way to sing all the Propers with cantor and congregation
  • Saint Meinrad Entrance and Communion Antiphons (Fr. Columba Kelly OSB) — Easy English antiphons with a short congregational refrain (in modern notation)
  • Simple English Propers (Adam Bartlett) — Correct Introit, Offertory and Communion Proper texts, set to simplified Gregorian melodies
  • The Proper of the Mass (Fr. Samuel F. Weber OSB) — A very comprehensive collection of English Propers in chant-style, using varying levels of complexity and difficulty
