Highlights
- Two settings of the Pentecost Sequence [Cantor and Festival Versions]
- Melody based on the chant Veni Sancte Spiritus
- Congregational refrain alternates with verses for cantor or choir
Description
The music and text of the Golden Sequence, "Veni Sancte Spiritus," is the basis for Dr. J. William Greene's settings of "Pentecost Sequence."
The refrain uses Latin and English, "Veni Sancte Spiritus; Come, O Holy Spirit divine."
There are ten verses, all in English.
In the Festival Version, the early verses alternate between 2-part women's voices and 2-part men's voices; the latter ones are set for full SATB choir.
Two trumpets enliven the refrains and verses in the Festival Version.
The Cantor Version is scored for cantor or unison choir, congregation and organ.
Fluid rhythms in alternating meters keep "Pentecost Sequence" faithful to the spirit and flow of the original chant melody.
What a wonderful way to revive this glorious chant sequence, with congregational involvement as well!
