Various chant settings of the Kyrie eleison are simple (and perhaps familiar) enough for the congregation to sing with or without music.
The power of Gregorian chant to set a mood and convey a prayerful atmosphere must never be overlooked or shunned, particularly not with the excuse of Latin being "old-fashioned."
