Liturgical Hints & Ideas:
The reference in the Benedictus to John the Baptist, "You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you shall go before the Lord to prepare his way..." makes this Morning Prayer canticle an ideal inclusion in today's liturgy. Perhaps, further, you might explore the legitimate option of combining Morning Prayer with Mass. This is how it would be done:
  • The celebration begins with either the Introductory Verse ("God, come to my assistance...") and Hymn of Morning Prayer or with the Entrance Song, Procession, and Greeting of Mass.
  • All are seated and the Psalmody of Morning Prayer is said (or sung).
  • After the psalmody, the Penitential Rite being omitted, all stand for the Kyrie and Gloria (although the Kyrie may also be omitted).
  • Then follows the Opening Prayer of Mass.

  • The Liturgy of the Word for Mass follows as usual, ending with the normal General Intercessions of Mass.

  • The Liturgy of the Eucharist proceeds as usual.
  • After the distribution of Communion (with the accompanying music), all stand to sing the Canticle of Zechariah (Benedictus) with its proper antiphon from Morning Prayer. During the singing, the altar, then the priest, then the people may be incensed.
  • The Prayer after Communon follows.

  • The Concluding Rite of Mass proceeds as usual.
