Mother and Head of All the Churches of the City and the World

Eventually the two famous Saint Johns, the Baptist and the Evangelist, came to be co-patrons of the basilica, and their statues flank that of the Redeemer on the imposing Baroque façade of the church. The church is the seat of power of the pope as Bishop of Rome, for this is his cathedral, not Saint Peter's.
