Liturgical Hints & Ideas:
The inscription in Latin on the façade of the Lateran Basilica reads:
Mother and Head of All the Churches of the City and the World
The "Basilica of Our Most Holy Savior," as originally known, was the first church publicly consecrated in the calm following the early years of Christan persecutions.
The Emperor Constantine was responsible for the basilica, constructed on land of the Laterani family, and the anniversary of its consecration on November 9 has been celebrated since at least the 12th century.
Eventually the two famous Saint Johns, the Baptist and the Evangelist, came to be co-patrons of the basilica, and their statues flank that of the Redeemer on the imposing Baroque façade of the church.
The church is the seat of power of the pope as Bishop of Rome, for this is his cathedral, not Saint Peter's.
Explore the beautiful texts of the Mass of the Dedication of a Church (which we probably haven't seen since our own church's dedication).
Music on these texts is ample.
See Processionals based on the Roman Basilicas.
Chant, linking our own parish to the seat of the Bishop of Rome, is particularly appropriate!
