Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation and Celebration of the Easter Feasts --

The ninety-day period known loosely as the "Easter Cycle" contains many of the most important celebrations of the liturgical year. It is a time of intense prayer, preparation, metanoia, initiation, rejoicing, and mystagogia. Many unusual, one-time rites fill its days. For this reason, the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship of the Holy See issued a document in 1988 clarifying the rubrics and offering official guidelines for the celebration of the "Easter Feasts."

The official Vatican document is divided as follows:

Preface

I. Lenten Season
  • Concerning the Rite of Christian Initiation
  • Celebrations during the Lenten Season
  • Particular Details Concerning the Days of Lent

II. Holy Week
  • Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday)
  • The Chrism Mass
  • The Penitential Celebrations in Lent

III. The Easter Triduum in General

IV. Holy Thursday Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper

V. Good Friday

VI. Holy Saturday

VII. Easter Sunday of the Lord's Resurrection
  • The Easter Vigil
    • The Meaning of the Nocturnal Character of the Vigil
    • The Structure of the Easter Vigil and the Significance of Its Different Elements and Parts
    • Some Pastoral Considerations
  • Easter Day

VIII. Easter Time

While musicians are quick to exercise the "loophole" found in many rubrics: "... or other suitable song," it is appropriate and interesting to note how many specific pieces of music are mentioned in this document:

  1. Psalm 24 and Psalm 47 with proper antiphons during the Palm Procession on Palm Sunday
  2. Ubi caritas during the Offertory Procession on Holy Thursday evening
  3. Pange lingua during the Eucharistic Procession on Holy Thursday evening
  4. The Reproaches during the Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday
  5. Vidi aquam or I Saw Water Flowing or proper antiphon during the Sprinkling Rite at the Easter Vigil
  6. Psalm 118 or Pascha nostrum or Psalm 34 during Communion at the Easter Vigil
  7. Vidi aquam or I Saw Water Flowing or proper antiphon during the Sprinkling Rite on Easter Sunday

The Circular Letter is quite a valuable document, available in print form from the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington DC, or from various other publishing sources. It is also available online at: Circular Letter
