Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- Gregorian Missal --

The full Graduale Romanum is the Church's official book for the choir. Every Proper chant for the year, both Sundays and weekdays, is contained in this volume. This may be more music than the "weekend" liturgist and musician needs. Also, all the titles, rubrics and instructions are in Latin. For this reason, the monks of Solesmes Abbey in France publish the Gregorian Missal.

The book is like a streamlined version of the Graduale Romanum. It has all the material one needs to chant the Propers for Sunday and major solemnities and feasts, but not the weekdays. Titles, rubrics and instructions are in English, and a non-singing translation is given for all the Gregorian chants in the book, including the elusive Offertory antiphon. The English Mass translation matches the Roman Missal — Third Edition (2010).

Contents (717 pages):

  • The Order of Mass, including music for all Mass parts not found in the Kyriale, as well as music for the Sprinkling Rite
  • The Chants of the Mass Ordinary [Kyriale]
    • 18 full Mass settings (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei)
    • 6 Credos
    • Extra individual Mass movements
  • Proper of Time
    Advent
    Christmas Time
    Lent
    Holy Week
    Easter Time
    Ordinary Time
Solemnities of the Lord during Ordinary Time
Each Mass Proper has these chants:
    1. Introit
    2. Gradual
    3. Alleluia or Tract
    4. Offertory
    5. Communion Antiphon
  • Proper of the Saints: Solemnities and Feasts
  • Common of the Dedication of a Church
  • Masses for the Dead
  • Indices

All the titles, rubrics and instructions are in English. All music is in neums (chant notation). A textbook on singing Gregorian chant, A Plain and Easy Introduction to Gregorian Chant, is available from CNP.

A non-singing translation is given for every chant in the book. The Ordinary of the Mass uses translations from the 2010 Roman Missal.

The Gregorian Missal is definitely a choir book, not meant for congregation.

The Solesmes edition has a hard back, navy blue cover and is printed on quality ivory paper in black ink. This is definitely the most "user-friendly" of the complete chant books for Mass, a must-have for anyone serious about using Gregorian Propers at Sunday Mass.
