Liturgical Hints & Ideas:
Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- Liturgical Calendar --

The last major revision to the Church Calendar was in 1969. It was organized in two cycles, the Temporal Cycle and the Sanctoral Cycle, with many feasts and celebration added and eliminated.

The Temporal Cycle begins with the First Sunday of Advent (the Sunday closest to November 30) and includes all the seasons of the Liturgical Year -- Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ordinary Time -- ending with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King.

The Sanctoral Cycle includes the solemnities, feasts and memorials (obligatory and optional) of Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints. Most of these are date-specific.

In terms of the Sundays of the year, the Temporal Cycle has almost complete precedence over the Sanctoral Cycle. For example, if the obligatory memorial of Saint Benedict (July 11) falls on a Sunday during Ordinary Time, the latter is celebrated and the memorial of Saint Benedict if suppressed for that year. If the feast of Saint Mark (April 25) falls on a Sunday of Eastertide, the latter is celebrated and the feast is suppressed. The following are a few celebrations that can replace a Sunday in Ordinary Time:

Solemnities:
  • Nativity of Saint John the Baptist (June 24)
  • Saints Peter and Paul (June 29)
  • Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15)
  • All Saints (November 1)
  • Proper solemnities in specific places (the principal patron of an area, the anniversary of the dedication of a church in that church, the patron title of a church, the founder of a religious order)
Feasts:
  • Presentation of the Lord (February 2)
  • Transfiguration of the Lord (August 6)
  • Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14)
  • Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (November 9)
Other:
  • Commemoration of the Faithful Departed - All Souls' Day (November 2)
The Table of Precedence at the beginning of the Sacramentary and the Liturgy of the Hours describes the "hierarchy" of the celebrations, i.e. what celebrations take precedence over what other days. This may be found online at Table of Precedence.
