Liturgical Hints & Ideas:
During summer Ordinary Time, when many weddings occur, we will review the musical elements of the marriage ceremony.
Engaged couples and the congregation also will benefit from a deeper understanding of these principles.
Parishes have permission to duplicate for their use the material in these "Liturgical Hints & Ideas" sections.
The Marriage Ceremony: Recessional / Postlude
The organ or instrumental recessional, drawn from legitimate liturgical sources, should be a jubilant finale to the marriage ceremony.
As with the processional, a vocal selection might be inappropriate, although if the congregation has not sung after communion, a hymn might be placed after the final blessing and before the recessional.
The postlude can easily be simply more of the recessional music, particularly is this is lengthy.
The music can accompany some of the congregation's leaving, and need not all be loud, although it should certainly be spirited and lively.
