Liturgical Hints & Ideas

During summer Ordinary Time, when many weddings occur, we will review the musical elements of the marriage ceremony. Engaged couples and the congregation also will benefit from a deeper understanding of these principles. Parishes have permission to duplicate for their use the material in these "Liturgical Hints & Ideas" sections.

The Marriage Ceremony: Lord's Prayer, Peace Rite and Agnus Dei

The Lord's Prayer may be either recited or sung by the congregation, using a simple setting. This is not the time for an elaborate solo or choral rendition of the Lord's Prayer (e.g. the setting by Malotte).

If a more elaborate Peace Rite is to be used, brief vocal or organ music may accompany the action. The couple should be counseled that this is a liturgical action that has symbolic meaning. It is not a time to greet every relative in the first three pews!

The Agnus Dei (Lamb of God litany) may be sung by the cantor and congregation alternately or by the soloist or choir alone.

Care should be taken that music not overwhelm these spots in the liturgy. Music at all three places (with Communion time coming shortly thereafter) will not contribute to the proper liturgical balance.

Suggestions:

Lord's Prayer
  • traditional chant formula
Peace Rite
Agnus Dei

To be continued next Sunday …
