Liturgical Hints & Ideas

During summer Ordinary Time, when many weddings occur, we will review the musical elements of the marriage ceremony. Engaged couples and the congregation also will benefit from a deeper understanding of these principles. Parishes have permission to duplicate for their use the material in these "Liturgical Hints & Ideas" sections.

The Marriage Ceremony: Hymns and Gloria

Hymns are appropriate at the wedding ceremony. A hymn may be used following the processional to unite the congregation in prayer. The music chosen must be familiar to members of the congregation. Hymns may also be sung at other points in the liturgy: Offertory, Communion, Closing. One must be pastorally sensitive to whether the congregation is likely to sing or not — this can be ascertained in one of the meetings with the couple. Nothing fosters poor liturgy quicker than non-participation or embarassingly hesitant singing.

The Gloria, a festive hymn of praise, is now sung at the wedding Mass [The Roman Missal - 3rd Edition], even during Lent. An easy setting should be used, perhaps one for cantor or choir and congregation.
