Liturgical Hints & Ideas

During Ordinary Time in Year B we will highlight passages from the 2010 General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) that pertain to music during the liturgy. The GIRM contains rubrics and instructions (some of them surprising) for the celebration of the Mass. The first section below is a direct quote from the document. The second section is a commentary on the passage.

The Different Forms of Celebrating Mass (GIRM #142)

… If, however, there is no Offertory Chant and the organ is not played, in the presentation of the bread and wine the Priest may say the formulas of blessing aloud and the people acclaim, Blessed be God for ever.

Commentary: The prayers of offering, derived from ancient Hebrew texts and beautiful as they are, are meant as "private prayers" by the priest as he readies the gifts for the sacrifice. The preference is for music here — perhaps singing by the choir or soloist, or even organ or instrumental music. This is not a communal, "congregational" moment, hence a hymn by the people is not the best musical option here.
