Liturgical Information
The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

Liturgical Color: White [Note: "On solemn occasions more precious vestments may be used, even if not the color of the day" GIRM #309]

Themes & Motives: glory, hope, splendor, fulfillment of Old Testament

Introit:
In the shining cloud the Spirit is seen; from it the voice of the Father is heard: This is my Son, my beloved, in whom is all my delight. Listen to him. (See Mt 17:5)

Opening Prayer:
God our Father,
in the transfigured glory of Christ your Son,
you strengthen our faith
by confirming the witness of your prophets,
and show us the splendor of your beloved sons and daughters.
As we listen to the voice of your Son,
help us to become heirs to eternal life with him
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lectionary Readings:
  • Daniel 7:9-10,13-14 [His vesture was like white snow. /v.9]
  • Psalm 97:1-2 / 5-6 / 9 [R. The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth. v.1,9]
  • II Peter 1:16-19 [We ourselves heard the utterance made from heaven. /v.22]
  • Gospel Verse: Matthew 17:5 [This is my Son, my beloved, in whom is all my delight.]
  • Matthew 17:1-9 [And His face shone like the sun. /v.2]

Prayer over the Gifts:
Lord,
by the transfiguration of your Son
make our gifts holy,
and by his radiant glory free us from our sins.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

Preface of the Transfiguration: [The Mystery of the Transfiguration]
Father, all-powerful and ever-living God,
we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

He revealed his glory to the disciples
to strengthen them for the scandal of the cross.
His glory shone from a body like our own,
to show that the Church,
which is the body of Christ,
would one day share his glory.

In our unending joy we echo on earth
the song of the angels in heaven
as they praise your glory for ever:

  Holy, holy, holy Lord...

Communion Antiphon:
When Christ is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. (I John 3:2)

Prayer after Communion:
Lord,
you revealed the true radiance of Christ
in the glory of the transfiguration.
May the food we receive from heaven
change us into his image.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.
