K. Rives
Cassel

K . Rives Cassel (pronounced Reeves Castle), a native of Newport News, VA, first played the organ for church services at the age of twelve, foreshadowing his career in church music. Continuing this trajectory, he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ Performance from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, OH, studying organ with David Boe. He then decided to teach elementary school and attended Hampton Institute (now University) in Hampton, VA to obtain a Virginia Teaching Certificate. With certificate in hand, he taught elementary school (third grade) for four years while continuing to serve as a part-time church Music Director/Organist (including a couple of years at a reformed Jewish temple). Pursuing his interest in liturgical music, he obtained the Master of Liturgical Music Degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington DC, studying organ with Dr. Robert Grogan. Following three more years as an elementary teacher and part-time parish music minister in Virginia, he moved to Minnesota, where he held his first full-time position of Music Director/Organist. After several years in Minnesota, he returned to the east coast, where he served as a full-time Director of Music/Organist in several parishes in New Jersey, teaching music in parish schools for much of that time. After a thirty-six-year career in church music, he retired in 2020.

Professional activities included serving on the Music Subcommittee for the Papal Visit of Pope John Paul II to New Jersey in October 1995, serving on the Environment and Art Subcommittee of the Archdiocese of Newark, and leading annual hour-long workshops on music in the Rites of Initiation at Immaculate Conception Seminary. He served on the executive board of the NPM chapter of the Archdiocese of Newark and taught annual summer workshops on learning to read music. Twice he was chair of the Westfield Bach Festival in Westfield, New Jersey, which planned a weekend of concerts of works by Johann Sebastian Bach presented as a joint venture of churches in Westfield, New Jersey. As a member of the Metropolitan New Jersey Chapter of the AGO, he served as Newsletter Editor, Sub-dean, Dean, and Chair of the 2011 convention for Regions 1 and 2, AGO Morristown 2011: Celebrate the Past-Forge the Future.

In retirement, he remains busy in areas both musical and non-musical.
