Here is a valuable book for permanent deacons and an appropriate gift for any man being ordained to the diaconate!
The Diaconale: Chants for the Deacon at Mass, with rich red paper binding, is a useful and valuable compilation of the music sung by the deacon, including his parts in the following:
- Penitential Rite: Form C
- Gospel Dialogue
- Gospel
- General Intercessions
- Sign of Peace
- Solemn Blessing
- Dismissal
Tones for chanting the Gospel are printed and explained, and several Gospels are set to music as examples.
All music is in "Vatican Square-Note Notation," but is simple enough that even those who are unfamiliar with reading chant notation can easily follow the music.
In the Introduction, the editor, Dr. Edward Schaefer writes:
Diaconale is provided to support the deacon in his preparations to assist at Mass.
Thus, each of the diaconal intonations is placed within the context of its surrounding chants [by the priest or congragation].
In this way, the deacon can not only prepare his own chants, but also gain a sense of comfort with regard to how they flow from and to the other chants of the Mass.
Dr. Schaefer is a renowned chant scholar and a consultant to the U.S. Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy regarding the chants for the new English translation of the Missale Romanum.
A permanent deacon of the Diocese of Spokane and Director of Choral Activities at Gonzaga University, he also plans and organizes a weekly sung liturgy on the Gonzaga University campus, using Gregorian chant propers, a chant Mass, and sung English responses and prayers.
