Dr. Schaefer is a renowned chant scholar and a consultant to the U.S. Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy regarding the chants for the new English translation of the Missale Romanum. A permanent deacon of the Diocese of Spokane and Director of Choral Activities at Gonzaga University, he also plans and organizes a weekly sung liturgy on the Gonzaga University campus, using Gregorian chant propers, a chant Mass, and sung English responses and prayers.
