A responsorial Gloria needs an engaging refrain for the congregation and effective verses for the cantor (or unison choir).
Gloria in C by Layton James has these, surrounded by a skillful accompaniment.
We include two versions of the accompaniment.
The original by the composer, deviates occasionally from the melody in free-accompaniment style.
This adds an invigorating spark to the congregation's sung prayer.
The alternate accompaniment, for use during the learning process or when a cantor or choir is not present, solos the melody on one manual with accompaniment on another manual and pedal.
Dr. James' setting can be used with cantor and congregation, or a unison choir (children or adults) can sing the cantor part.
Once the congregation hears the verses, they may wish to sing the entire Gloria, as a through-composed setting.
The practical vocal range (middle C to fourth line D-flat) makes this a flexible and useful liturgical piece.
Layton James is the currently Director of Music at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson, Minnesota, and is principal keyboardist for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
